Is Qi Gong a martial art? No, not really, Qi Gong is a series of exercises based on relaxation, breathing and stretching which is to encourage health and peace of mind as well as to develop the internal flows of energy that are key to Chinese internal martial arts, known as Qi (or Chi)
Am I too old to learn martial arts? No! classes are suitable for all. Students should only do what they are comfortable with and put in as much effort as they like from a gentle progression to working up a good sweat!
What should I wear? Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended. You can exercise barefoot or with flat soled trainers or martial arts slippers.
I am not keen on sparring and do not wish to get injured, is it compulsory? No. Tai Ji, Ba'Gua and Xing Yi, are all internal martial arts. These are often seen as gentle pursuits, but can be very effective martial arts. Dr Wen will often show and teach the applications to aid in the understanding of certain movements. Joining in with application & pairs work is very controlled and gentle and of course a voluntary pursuit. Only in San Da free fighting classes will actual sparring be a key part of the course.
My fitness level is not great so can I still join the Class? Yes. Train at your own pace, and you will find your fitness improving. The classes will give you back what you put in, and even internal and ‘slow’ arts like tai chi can give you a very good work out as you flex your internal muscles and sink lower into your stances!
Can I come along and watch your classes? Yes...our classes are open to everyone. You are more than welcome to come along and watch our classes. Everyone who is interested is welcome at Yan Huang, men and women, old and young. Bring a friend if you feel shy!
